A lovely lady came all the way from England to explore and experience my beautiful hometown, Nagaland, and for that, we will always be grateful. It is wonderful to see someone from another part of the world taking an interest in our land, culture, traditions, and way of life.
However, I was disappointed to see our people recommending dog meat to her instead of introducing her to the incredible variety of traditional Naga food we have to offer.
We have so much to showcase—our smoked meats, bamboo shoot dishes, axone, fermented foods, indigenous vegetables, and countless traditional recipes that carry the history and identity of our people.
And honestly, we need to be willing to leave behind the more savage aspects of our past. Eating dog meat is not something we should feel the need to proudly advertise or use as a representation of Naga culture.
And food is a personal choice. A guest should never be pressured into eating something they may be uncomfortable with simply because it is considered traditional by some.
If we want the world to appreciate Nagaland, let us show them the best of who we are— by celebrating the richness, diversity, warmth, and dignity of our culture.

As a Naga, I’m often disappointed by the lack of authenticity, cultural knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm among some Naga hosts and tour guides. There is pride in our identity, but not always the understanding needed to represent our culture accurately. We should think beyond the usual narratives—showcase the unexplored beauty of Nagaland, the realities of everyday Naga life, our traditions, stories, and even our evolving Naga-fusion cuisine. The food presented to visitors can sometimes feel underwhelming, and honestly, even as a Naga, I don’t always find it particularly appealing or representative of how good our food can actually be. There is so much more to Naga culture than what is usually put on display. Still, I’m glad you got a glimpse of it.
