As an European not moving out of the way when an ambulance is on the road is absurd. How can you not move out of the way??? It"s an ambulance!!!

I think most road users in Europe have one thing in common: “I could potentially be in the ambulance and in mortal danger.” And so many drivers react accordingly: get out of the way and leave as much space as possible.
You don't need driving lessons for that, it's just common sense.

Some context: That "race" saved a child and the driver was on the headlines on any newspaper in Hungary.
Yes, it was in Budapest.
Also some context: In Europe you HAVE to go out of the way, if you do not, you can be held liable.
You are even allowed to cross a red light, when that allows an ambulance, police or firebrigade to pass!
The same happens on the highways... if they are only 2 lanes, you have to go either as left or as right as you can and let the emergency vehicle pass. If you would use this lane, you will get fined extremley, if you don't move even criminal charges can be applied.
I know, unthinkable in the land of "free".

The ambulance always has the right of way. After all, you learn that in driving school. Every student is also told that, because there could come a time when you need an ambulance, and then you'll be glad when they arrive quickly and help you.

This is Budapest. They do an excellent job, working overtime, and for a quarter of the salary they earn in Western Europe.Massiv respect.

Drivers make room for the ambulance because tomorrow an ambulance may rush to save their life.

This ambulance driver exactly knows the dimensions of his ambulance, and he exactly knows where to go. The ambulance has three sirens blaring, and has massive lights on the front. This, combined with the general public being trained in their driving lessons to always be aware of emergency vehicles approaching from anywhere, is golden.

Ambulances, fire trucks, police, and any vehicle with a sounding siren always have absolute priority. If the siren isn't sounding, the vehicle has the same obligations as any other vehicle.

The "secret" is that as soon as you notice an ambulance, you slow down drastically, which makes it way easier to stop and or get out of the way. Ambulances always have the right of way. Drivers in the US and A often don't change their behaviour at all and then do a Surprised Pikachu Face when they ambulance appears right next to them. It also helps that European sirens make full use of the Doppler-Effect, so you can judge how far away the ambulance is purely based on sound.

You may not have noticed but the driver is also tapping his horn to change the siren tone through some sequences.  They do the same thing in the UK.  A sudden change of tone can more easily snap drivers out of their autopilot state.
Oh, and by the way, the ride in the ambulance will be free of charge to the accident victim.

Are you seriously telling me this isn’t normal behaviour in the USA?  God almighty, yet another reason no one from a western country would ever want to live there.

In Europe, there is a uniform law that states that anyone who deliberately prevents firefighters, ambulances, or police from passing through when their blue lights are flashing can be sentenced to a fine or imprisonment. Therefore, everyone in Europe adheres to the fact that the emergency services arrive at their destination to save lives.

In Hungarian ambulances, there’s a button that, when the driver presses it, makes the ambulance shrink and become much narrower. That’s how it can pass through tight spaces without slowing down. Another button saves the current state before overtaking, and if there’s an accident, it reloads the world and tries again.

I'll add a little detail: look at the hand holding the wheel, A hand... where's the second one? ON THE GEARBOX SHIFTER, because thise madmen not only drive crazy fast AND good, but also do that on a manual (on a stick for my fellow Americans)

That road was quite empty. You should see what happens at peak hour, when we are all crammed at a stop like sardines, but then we hear ambulance and somehow squeeze left or right to make way for it to pass. Everything is in slow motion because the traffic is so heavy, but the road gets cleared enough for it to pass.

Yup, it's Budapest. The video starts at the intersection of "Róna utca" and "Nagy Lajos király útja" (14th district), then they turn to the city approach section of M3 motorway, and to the "Hungária körút" (ring road), where you can see the tram line no. 1. Soon they go through "Árpád híd" (the longest bridge of Budapest above the Danube river). On the other end of the bridge they turn left to "Pacsirtamező utca", and continue on "Lajos utca". In the end they turn right to "Kolosy tér" (2nd district). The total length of this journey is about 7.5 kms (around 4.5 miles)

He legit said central or eastern depending on your definition. wow, i'm shocked. thats impressive.

7:32 - You missed the OTHER ambulance who was not in an emergency that moved over CORRECTLY (like everybody should) to the right hand side.

i live here, this is Budapest and i can confirm thats not a highway :D

There are several reasons why this works so well in Hungary and most of Europe.

- As others have already mentioned, getting a driver's license in Hungary is incomparable to the States. Also, to drive an ambulance or firetruck, you need an additional certificate called PÁV (Assessment of Fitness to Drive), which requires you to prove you have excellent psychological and mental capabilities, top-tier reflexes, and a really high level of stress tolerance.

- Ambulance drivers are confident because they know and expect that other drivers will do their best to pull over or make space for the truck.

- Drivers react this way for two reasons.
First, it's common sense to help each other. Next time, it may be you, your child, or your mother in that ambulance.
The second reason is that the ambulance won't stop. If it scratches your car while getting through, that's the consequence. You can try to go to court and explain why you didn't react, but you probably won't get any insurance money.
In the Hungarian city of Szeged, I saw with my own eyes how a firetruck pushed an illegally parked car out of the way. They will do whatever it takes to get to the address.
