On January 11, 1944, high above Oschersleben, Germany, forty American B-17 Flying Fortresses were surrounded by more than thirty German fighters. Their escort had scattered. The bombers were exposed. Hundreds of American airmen were moments away from disaster.
Then one silver P-51 Mustang turned back.
This is the true story of Major James Howell Howard, a quiet American pilot who had already survived bandits in China, fought with the Flying Tigers, and become an ace before Europe ever knew his name. Flying his Mustang “Ding Hao,” Howard stood alone between the Luftwaffe and the 401st Bomb Group for thirty unforgettable minutes.
Even when his guns jammed… even when his ammunition ran out… even when his aircraft was damaged… he kept attacking.
One man. One Mustang. Thirty German fighters.
A forgotten act of courage that helped bring American bomber crews home.
Watch until the end to understand why James Howard became one of the most remarkable fighter pilots of World War II.
