A lucky and useful extra, I've had a Clifton StaySet, cap iron (the 1980s remake). It is on my No7 of a similar age to yours. The thicker metal of the StaySet improves the performance of the plane blade. It seems to dampen chatter, and speeds up resharpening. My lever cap is the same dark colour, not chromed, is it a nickel finish?

Having to much fun with it. You know it’s right when you don’t want to put it down. I like how you restore a plane. Liked and subscribed

Nice work 🔨👍😊

I’m thinking the idea that the blade can be sharpened without the bother of removing the chip breaker needs to be examined. Sharpening will generally remove material, so that the chip breaker is no longer properly positioned relative to the iron, and therefore needs to be adjusted anyway.

A beautiful plane and as you said in very good initial condition. I have a no 7 that I will refurbish later on and it is in a bad condition compared to the one you have here.  Lots of surface rust and pitting and most of the Japaning cracked and scratched.  But I will get it back in shaving state sometime this year.
Keep up the good work!

I need a bigger shed........

The plane was in excellent condition.   Cleaned up easily.  Well done.
I have a granite slab I used to check/flatten the soles of planes.    The main area to be flat is from the toe to the back of the mouth for best performance.
I hope I can find a Record Stay-set cap iron at a flea market.    Record planes are not so common in the US.
One of my first hand plane restorations was a Stanley No 7.   Mine is Type 16, so has the kidney shaped hole in the cap iron.    This one has corrugated sole.   I prefer a non-corrugated sole which I find easier to sight the blade when adjusting.   I had to make my first tote and knob for this restoration.
My first flea market visit this past Friday.   Some vendors had very reasonable prices, like a Stanley #5 for $20.   Another vendor had a Stanley #6 for $115, far too high a price in my opinion.  I did see some #7's but did not look at the price.  I have the one I restored and another one awaiting restoration so I do not need another #7.
I did find a Taintor Positive 1900 saw set tool for $1.   I had to get this just to see how they work.    The 1900 refers to the last year of the 4 patent dates, so this tool is perhaps 120 years old.   It seems this is good for up to 10 teeth per inch blade.
I purchased a cap iron screw driver from Veritas.   It has a wider blade to match the large head of the cap iron screws.    I recommend keeping an eye out on your flea market visits for a screwdriver with wider blade to help prevent damage to the cap iron screw from the screwdriver blade being shorter than the width of the screw head slot.
Dave.

Best thing out record stay set cap iron and record iron are best crucible steel you wont get any better unless you get some infill planes which i have ten of and use dailey .

Have the #6 thanks for showing both restorations. I do like your workbench vise what kind is it if you have time to answer.

Love these plane restoration vids! 😎
Couple questions my good man. Was that a wire disk you chucked up in the drill press? And was that also a buffer disk you chucked up too? Some explanation on those tools would be appreciated.
Thank you!

A very informative video! Where did you find the information about the exact type and age? Could you please pass me the information on the source? Greetings from Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany! Kuno
