The lore of Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF) is one of the most complicated stories in gaming. It spans games, novels, minigames, hidden endings, and decades of in-universe events. Some details are confirmed, while others remain intentionally ambiguous.
Here’s the story in chronological order based on the strongest evidence from the games.
⸻
Before Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Two engineers become business partners:
William Afton
Brilliant roboticist.
Eventually becomes a serial child murderer.
Often called the Purple Guy because of the purple sprite used in minigames.
Henry Emily
Co-founder.
Designer of many animatronics.
Father of Charlotte (“Charlie”).
They create Fredbear’s Family Diner, featuring two springlock suits:
Fredbear
Spring Bonnie
These suits can operate as both costumes and animatronics.
⸻
The first tragedy
William murders Henry’s daughter, Charlotte Emily, outside the restaurant.
Her soul possesses The Puppet (Marionette).
This is one of the first supernatural events in the series.
The Puppet later becomes responsible for giving life to many murdered children’s spirits.
⸻
The Missing Children Incident William dresses as Spring Bonnie and lures five children into a back room.
He murders them.
The Puppet helps their spirits possess:
Freddy Fazbear
Bonnie
Chica
Foxy
Golden Freddy (often believed to contain Cassidy, though details are debated)
These haunted animatronics begin attacking adults at night because they mistake them for William—or simply because they’re trapped and confused.
⸻
The Crying Child (1983)
William has several children:
Michael Afton
Elizabeth Afton
the unnamed Crying Child
The Crying Child is terrified of Fredbear.
Michael and his friends bully him.
On his birthday, they place his head inside Fredbear’s mouth.
Fredbear’s springlock jaw crushes his skull.
This becomes known as The Bite of ’83.
The child dies.
His exact fate afterward is still debated. William secretly creates a new company:
Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental.
The Funtime animatronics are secretly designed to kidnap children.
William warns his daughter Elizabeth to stay away from Circus Baby.
She doesn’t listen.
Circus Baby kills Elizabeth using a hidden capture mechanism.
Elizabeth’s soul possesses Circus Baby.
⸻
William experiments with souls
William discovers that souls can haunt metal.
Fans call this substance Remnant.
He begins experimenting with immortality using haunted animatronics.
This obsession drives nearly everything afterward.
⸻
Sister Location
Michael Afton is sent underground by William.
He encounters:
Circus Baby
Ballora
Funtime Freddy
Funtime Foxy
The Funtime animatronics combine into Ennard.
They scoop out Michael’s internal organs.
Ennard wears Michael’s body as a disguise.
Eventually his body decays.
Ennard leaves.
Michael somehow survives because of Remnant.
He vows to find William.
⸻
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza closes
As more disappearances occur, Freddy’s locations repeatedly shut down and reopen.
Different games occur at different restaurants.
These include:
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
Five Nights at Freddy’s
various smaller locations
Each closure is tied to murders, strange accidents, or haunted animatronics. William returns to an abandoned Freddy’s.
He dismantles haunted animatronics.
The children’s ghosts corner him.
He hides inside the Spring Bonnie suit.
Moisture triggers the springlocks.
The suit violently crushes him.
He dies inside it.
But because of Remnant and supernatural forces…
…he survives as Springtrap.
⸻
Five Nights at Freddy’s 3
Thirty years later:
A horror attraction called Fazbear’s Fright opens.
Springtrap is discovered inside.
The attraction burns down.
Springtrap escapes.
⸻
Pizzeria Simulator (FNaF 6)
Henry creates one final restaurant.
He secretly gathers:
Springtrap
Scrap Baby
Molten Freddy
Lefty (containing the Puppet)
Once everyone is inside…
Henry locks the building.
He sets it on fire.
His goal:
free the children’s souls
destroy William forever
end Fazbear Entertainment
Henry dies alongside everyone else.
This is one of the series’ most emotional endings.
⸻
Ultimate Custom Night
William appears trapped in an endless nightmare.
Many fans believe this is his personal hell.
One spirit—often believed to be Cassidy—keeps him alive to suffer forever.
Scott Cawthon has never fully confirmed exactly what this realm is. Fazbear Entertainment creates a VR game to improve its reputation.
Old circuit boards are scanned.
William’s consciousness somehow survives digitally.
He becomes:
Glitchtrap
A digital virus.
Glitchtrap manipulates a security guard named Vanessa.
She becomes:
Vanny
His reluctant follower. Years later:
The enormous Mega Pizzaplex opens.
Main characters include:
Gregory
Glamrock Freddy
Vanessa
Vanny
Under the building are ruins of the old pizzeria.
A damaged William—often called Burntrap—appears beneath the Pizzaplex, though later games have cast doubt on how literally this ending should be interpreted.
Another creature, The Blob (later associated with Tangle), also appears.
The canon ending of Security Breach remained uncertain until later releases.
⸻
Ruin DLC
The DLC shifts the story significantly.
Cassie enters the ruined Pizzaplex searching for Gregory.
She discovers:
the Mimic
the MXES security system
Gregory may not actually be present for much of what she hears
The Mimic is an advanced endoskeleton capable of copying voices and behaviors.
Current evidence strongly suggests that the Mimic—not William Afton—is now the primary antagonist of the modern storyline.
⸻
The Mimic
The Mimic was originally built to learn by imitation.
It eventually copied violent behavior.
Over time it became increasingly dangerous.
Many fans believe:
Glitchtrap may have been connected to or created from the Mimic’s behavior rather than William’s literal spirit.
This interpretation has become much more widely accepted following later games and books, although every detail has not been explicitly confirmed.
⸻
Major Timeline
Fredbear’s Family Diner opens.
Charlotte Emily is murdered.
Puppet becomes possessed.
Crying Child dies (Bite of ’83).
Missing Children Incident.
Elizabeth dies to Circus Baby.
Sister Location events.
FNaF 2.
FNaF 1.
William becomes Springtrap.
FNaF 3.
Pizzeria Simulator fire.
Ultimate Custom Night.
Help Wanted.
Security Breach.
Ruin.
Biggest Mysteries That Still Aren’t Fully Solved
Even after many games, some questions remain intentionally unresolved:
The exact identity and role of the Crying Child after death.
Whether Golden Freddy contains one spirit or multiple spirits in the games.
How literally some book details should be applied to the game timeline.
The precise relationship between Glitchtrap, the Mimic, and William Afton.
Which Security Breach ending was originally intended before Ruin refined the story.
Part of FNaF’s appeal is that creator Scott Cawthon leaves clues across minigames, hidden dialogue, and environmental details, so some aspects are still debated by the community.

Let’s not call these kids and teens idiots. I’d rather them play this game than in the streets ACTUALLY killing each other. I’d take this over the latter 100/100 times

Last time i played bonelab I did the exact same thing. Level 1 crook to Level 100 mafia boss. Made and broke alliances. 8/10 experience. The server i did had a currency system and actual store owners and stuff so we did rob them a lot.
