🇬🇧 THE GOLDEN AGE OF BRITISH JAZZ & SIR JOHN DANKWORTH
During the early 1950s, London’s Soho neighborhood became the beating heart of European jazz. Disillusioned by traditional styles, a new generation of British musicians embraced the modern sounds of American Bebop and Cool Jazz, giving it a uniquely refined, British flavor.
At the center of this cultural revolution was Sir John Dankworth (1927–2010). An extraordinary alto saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer, Dankworth formed "The Dankworth Seven" in 1950. Their innovative arrangements, melodic grace, and swing precision captivated London and proved that British jazz could stand proudly alongside the finest American recordings.
Dankworth, along with his lifetime partner Dame Cleo Laine, shaped the soundtrack of post-war Britain—from legendary West End club sessions to iconic film and television scores. This 2-hour collection pays homage to that vibrant, golden era of West End night life.
