A little behind-the-scenes story
Day 1: During the sunset climb toward Monte Perdido, I ran into trouble with my heart.
Day 2: People advised me to end the hike and return to town. I still remember the words: “The mountains aren’t going anywhere.” But I chose to continue.
After that, my heart still hurt a bit for the next 3–4 days. I also badly burned my feet in the sun (I forgot my sunscreen at home). I barely slept most nights, and by the end of the trip I was completely exhausted.
Day 4: I pitched my tent near a dam. In the middle of the night I woke up from a nightmare and reached around in the dark for my water bottle — but what I was touching was the floor of my tent. The water rose fast, and my tent was literally floating — and so was I, on my sleeping pad. The water was about 10 cm deep.
I packed everything up and started hiking again at 4 a.m., heading to Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube, where I stayed for a day to rest and finally get some sleep.
(At least I now know my tent is 200% waterproof.)
