I went to Big Sur in 2008 to fight the wildfires and it was the best learning opportunity, both professionally and personally! I had a prison crew  right by our camp and they were the best guys, truly amazing men that really did make a difference. The locals were amazing and so supportive as well. I’ll never forget that time or everyone I met and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.

Ive been in a tornado more than once in my life. Even in michigan. The worst was camping with my exhusband in a tent. It was so loud, scary, intense, the tent would go down covering us like a sheet then in a second it would go up like a baloon. Up and down like 15 times. Then it was over. We got out of our tent and the long entrance of the campground was treelined. The trees were cut off like 10 foot high like match dticks perfectly all the way down the drive in. Campers were on their sides. I dont know how we lived with no tent damage. But i did stake it down with 11 inch spikes

That tornado sequence was intense! As fascinating as natural disasters are, when we look at the human impact it's absolutely humbling.

I lived in Houston when Hurricane Ike hit.  We lived off of 45 south and W Bellfort.  4 weeks no power and it was scary.  I grew up in S Florida and I was used to hurricanes, Ike changed my mind.

"I wanted to see what a hurricane was like face to face" okay yeah have fun with that. It's a bunch of rain pissing in your face.

I was there in houston, this was my bday weekend. I turned 18. It was a crazy experience for sure.

I was only 8 when Ike hit. Wiped out Galveston State Park in Texas and took a bunch of shops off the seawall. Some of them never returned. Thank God, Murdochs rebuilt. My favorite shop to visit when I'm in Galveston

I live in good ole boring michigan the mitten. Which is fitting cuz we wear mittens for about 3 to 4 months out of a year. I was born here but my heart is with the ocean. Before my life is over, i plan to move to the coast anywhere..with my lil chihuahua. Just her and myself.

I can only speak to tornados - grew up in Tx but remember my first F1 at 5 yrs old, saw one form on the road at 33, chased by an F1 on the road at night at 37. We are so used to it we are trained to hunker down during a watch/warning or esp sirens. Its also exciting so we get distracted by that. It doesnt make sense though how few ppl here have storm shelters. Theyre pretty common though up in OK. Id like to see cities have huge storm shelters and it should be required in new homes. We get used to it…but we forget about F5s and the chance of surviving those…I helped clean up in Moore OK after an F5 and it was very eye opening…so was my close encounter on the road and I take warnings very differently now.
