"THE ERIKA OIL SINKING" / It is 2:30 p.m. on December 11, 1999. Off the French coast, in the Atlantic Ocean, 300 km from Brest and 400 km from Saint-Nazaire. Aboard the oil tanker Erika, the first mate is worried: he has just discovered three cracks. This is very alarming because the Maltese-flagged vessel is heavily laden: on board are 31,000 tons of fuel oil, the equivalent of 1,000 tanker trucks. But above all, a storm is raging. The sea is raging... As the hours pass, the cracks widen. Adrift in the Atlantic, amidst these waves, the Erika spends a chaotic night. The ship finally breaks apart the next day at 8:00 a.m. The toll is undeniable: 400 km of polluted coastline, 150,000 birds lost, 250,000 tons of waste. What really happened on board? Why couldn't the oil tanker withstand the storm? Why couldn't the oil spill have been prevented? Thanks to ultra-realistic 3D animations and interviews with witnesses, tanker captains, and leading experts, we will relive this tragedy second by second to better understand it.
