This is the 3rd time ive watched this. I dont work in nearly the same levels of precision but i enjoy this. I just put it on while im working. Tonight it got me through rebuilding an extruder for a 3d printer. Good stuff guys.

OK, so there's people who don't like this procedure. However, metrology practice is that you start off with a granite plate, use that to scrape cast iron plates, and mark off work from those.

The bottom line is that nobody can deny that Lance removed a (relatively) substantial amount of material, evaluating the result as AA. It would have been useful to have an accredited professional verify that, confirming that Lance was removing the /right/ material.

Thinking about watching Alan (and others) working, they first mark out using the side of the plate further from the lathe or mill, then occasionally use a relatively small area nearer the machinetool to check specific measurements. I suggest that that accounts for the plate's initial state: one side and one corner relatively worn.

What the hell are you making that has to be that accurate. If the floor isn't level the table isn't level etc etc If temp and humidity change stuff jesus this all seems overkill.

Credibility is associated to what the gauges say. Now what your area of expertise is.

I'm a noob: why is this done by hand? is there no machine to make it even flatter? or if you use a lapping tool that is bigger as the granite surface, would it not result in a perfectly flat surface?

That graph could be made using a machinist level also too?

32:20 why don't you just use the integrated fine adjust on the Mahr Millimess 1002? It's the knob on the bottom right corner, to start in the middle of the fine adjust range the white dot on the black knob should face towards you.
