“God made HASSELBLAD so even LEICA owners would have something to dream about for Christmas.” –Ken Rockwell

I feel like the medium format separation of the Hasselblad is quite noticeable in some of these images.

Love the photos from the Leica sl3p

Both are great cameras. I went from the SL system to the Hasselblad system primarily for multiple reasons. I don’t need video. Hasselblad and lenses are lighter. Medium format sensor. Hasselblad color science. I like being able to quickly change the crop factor. I like the menu systems of both cameras. The SL lenses are magnificent. I would anyone considering either system to try them and see which works for them. The nice folks at Camera West let me try both. In fact, on a Sierra workshop they gave me a Hasselblad for the whole time. Two thumbs up for a brick and mortar dealer.

The YouTuber @jamespopsys did a video recently were he took images across three (I think) different camera brands, and edited them all identical to the point were you could not tell which images was shot with which camera. The conclusion from this something you touch upon in the video, the right camera ultimately comes down to feel in the hand and how it makes you want to work etc.

That 35mm APO is a the star of the show here!

As always a great video; this time I particularly loved the lighting and context of your video. Oh yeah, and your model is amazing! :) As for the camera comparison — not my market. Given the resolution of these cameras, it is hard to imagine comparing the quality of the images post the YouTube squeeze can really be helpful. I think it comes down to your credibility and judgement to guide people. And based on what I know — yeah, really not comparable. Fun to see you in the forest though!

I appreciate the comparison between these cameras, but I really like how your VGCO Porta 400 makes the SOOC images pop.  Thank you for sharing that.

Dave, I always appreciate your presentations, so thank you for this comparison. I was hoping that it would have been the SL3 instead of the "P", due to the additional stop of dynamic range that it affords. I will say that I miss the 43rds format of medium format but agree that the ease of use and "inspirability" (I know that's not a real word!) of the SL is pretty amazing. Thanks again for the video sir!

one note, at 6:12 the highlight difference on the leaves on the left are NORMAL, hasselblad's esp. the film ones, and wide angles have harsh flare and glare, its just the format, if you are in such light, get a hood for the lens, or use a 1.3x ND filter, that will even things out. Also going to lower f numbers helps (the iris blades act as shades), and it also saves focus, as it increases the depth of field, so you don't have to be as accurate; as you do when wide open, if shooting the flowers the wind will blow it out of focus, the dof is that small at f2.8 (for the 33x44mm sensor size, a 0.79x crop factor applies, so its actually f 2.2 so virtually a 1 stop difference in exposure levels, and a correspondingly shallower focus box).

I quite like the warmer skin tones on the SL. I've recently picked my SL2 again for portraiture work and enjoying the rendering over the maybe the more clinical canon r5

Even though a bit silly, it's a nice comparison. I wasn't have a crisis about the 'blad but I really want to try one. I think this just makes me feel even better about my SL's... they just work so darn good and the photos looks stellar.

I’m lucky enough to own both. X2DII is now my primary studio camera and sl3/sl3s is my event/location camera. I use Leica more because the amazing number of L mount lenses make it way more versatile.

The photos are essentially identical and awesome. I own both systems and it’s more about inspiration than technicalities as you point out. Fun watch for a ridiculous comparison! You both are awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I have the SL3 Reported and M11P Safari.  Tempted to get the Hasselblad.  However, then I will keep thinking about the M11 mono.  :)

Thanks for that. SL3p for portraits for me. But I guess you will also look at landscape where the Hassy is practically the standard right now. Although then the 60MB res of the SL3  might have an edge over the SL3p. Only for people chasing the ultimate IQ anyway I guess.

Beautiful dimples and smiles make both cameras images shine. Don’t forget.

The color science between the two are just gorgeous! The versatility of the Leica vs Hasselblad does give you flexibility in the field… but dang the Hasselblad colors are pretty hard to beat for commercial purposes, such as billboards and photographers in studio.

I’ve bought sold then rebought the X2D and I am just happy with the x2d and the IQ IT provides. I’ve shot it all. I even sold my 4 month old M11 as I just couldn’t get behind the manual focus. Beautiful Iq too but for my shooting it’s just too much of a distraction. The original X2D AF is just good enough for what I need it for and I’d argue for this shoot it’s all you need. I have my R5ii for those run n gun type scenarios. Couldn’t get me to switch from canon to the SL3p unless you maybe gave me one for free.

I will say though when I used my H series camera the H4D60 even with its limitations I’d almost prefer that even over the X2D. Just to old and had errors. The OVF was just superb. I even owned the GFX100ii and still I think it’s more superior to the Hasselblad in AF and tracking and burst shooting. A true powerhouse. Good vid though always love your stuff. Little over edited though on both for my taste. Would have been great to get her face in the shade more.
